Senior Home in Volmarstein Enjoys Blossoming Resident Garden

A small green spot for gardening has recently been added to the Ev. Foundation Volmarstein senior home, bringing joy and nostalgia to its elderly residents. The new resident garden, located in front of the home's entrance, has been made possible by a generous donation from the Hasper Lions Club.

At 69 years old, Michael Schwenzcke, a wheelchair user, is particularly thrilled with the raised bed. He finds it a delightful addition, allowing him to garden without any issues while using his rollator. Dagmar Schwermer (72) also tends to the strawberry plants from her wheelchair, enjoying the sense of connection to the earth.

Waltraud Petry (90 years old) appreciates the scent of thyme from the resident garden, while many other residents look forward to replanting the garden as spring approaches. The anticipation is great, as they reminisce about beautiful garden times in the past.

Jacqueline Ermler, a social worker, finds the resident garden a great enrichment for the elderly residents. She notes that it provides a sense of purpose and a therapeutic outlet for many. The residents started gardening in the spring, with herbs, strawberry plants, and lettuce cuttings being planted in the raised bed.

The raised bed stands on stable high legs, making it accessible for all residents. It was installed in front of the senior home's entrance, making it a welcoming sight for all who visit. The lettuce salad, fresh from their own production, has been a side dish for dinner for several days for all residents of the senior home.

The donation for the garden bed at the Haspe nursing home was made by the Hasper Lions Club, with additional funds raised through donations. The residents are grateful for this generous gift, as it allows them to conveniently get their hands dirty and enjoy gardening.

As the resident garden continues to grow and flourish, it serves as a testament to the power of community and the joy that can be found in the simple act of tending to plants. The senior home in Volmarstein is now a shining example of how even the smallest green spaces can make a big difference in the lives of the elderly.
